A Trail Together

Just, Douse, Willow, and Jester jogged along the trail.  There was not much conversation, save for Willow or Douse telling them to stop to sniff out some side trail or to look at a turn in the road.
Apparently, this Scouting was serious business.
The group came to a large waystone in the road at the base of a bridge over a small, inconsequential creek.  The road continued both straight over the bridge and veered off to the right.  Douse held up his hands to stop them.
“Just,” he said.  “I want you to run to the outside of that waystone.  Take it wide and then turn into the creek.  Make your way across and then head back over the bridge.  I’m curious as to how easily we can run through that dribble.”
“Come back over the bridge?  Which way is Mark going?”
“Oh, we never mean to cross the bridge,” said Willow.  “Mark goes to the right.  But who will get here first?”
“The fast runners,” Just replied.
“Exactly,” continued Willow.  “If we send the fastest people around the waystone, into the creek, and back over the bridge, we can run them so that by the time they are done with this fool’s errand, everyone else has caught up and they are together again.”
“The point is to keep everyone together,” stated Douse.  Jester nodded.  “A clever Trail knows there are fast, medium, and slow runners, and accounts for this.  If everyone shows up for mead at the same time, or close to it, we have done our job well.”
Just nodded and ran off to the waystone.
