EWH3 #1292: The Kingman Park Trail! – 6:45 PM Thursday, April 28, 2022 – Stadium-Armory (Orange/Blue/Silver)

As the CDC and DC Health continue to update and revise guidelines, Mismanagement is working to determine how the hash fits into these recommendations. For this reason, masks are optional for fully vaccinated individuals. Vessels are still required for everyone.

***********

To be clear, this trail has NOTHING to do with the problematic Kingsman movie franchise (Taron Egerton’s charm be damned). Instead, it is about the Kingman Park Neighborhood! You know, the area that used be large mudflats along the Anacostia due to deforestation. Then marsh grass sprang up, catching the raw sewage being dumped there, and public health officials worried the flats were a breeding ground for mosquitos carrying malaria and yellow-fever. That’s the place, let’s go!

In the 1920s the Anacostia was dredged and the soil was dumped on the wetlands and designated Anacostia Park (no one mentioned the wetlands’ role in cleaning water and absorbing floods). Houses went up and were predominately bought by Black middle-class families headed by federal employees and/or folks that left the Deep South during the great Migration.

Kingman Park residents have a strong history of civil action. There were able to prevent the Oklahoma Ave Metro Station, the 695 extension, a second football stadium next to RFK, and a theme park on Kingman Island. In 2003, they even got DC officials to cancel the 10-year deal for car races in the RFK parking lots!

After the run we will take in some Kingman Park nightlife with an On-After at the Biergarten Haus on H Street. They serve bier BY THE LITER.
